About Parque Natural de los Volcanes

Parque Natural de los Volcanes is one of the most extraordinary protected areas in the Canary Islands, located in the southern part of Lanzarote. Established to preserve the island’s volcanic landscape shaped by eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries, the park offers an awe-inspiring terrain of lava fields, basaltic cones, craters, and ash plains. Its geography reflects the island’s formation during volcanic activity, with dramatic landforms such as the prominent Caldera del Corazoncillo and Montaña Rajada. The park is ecologically important for its endemic flora specially adapted to harsh, nutrient-poor volcanic soils, including resilient species such as Euphorbia balsamifera and various lichens and succulents. Wildlife is sparse but includes several native lizard species and a variety of birds. Historically, the volcanic eruptions that created these landscapes have fascinated scientists and visitors alike, shaping Lanzarote’s cultural identity. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy extensive hiking routes across lava tubes, volcanic craters, and panoramic viewpoints, offering surreal landscapes that seem almost lunar. Cycling and horseback riding are also popular ways to explore the park’s rugged terrain. The area is relatively dry, with striking contrasts between black lava rock and desert plants, making it a compelling destination for photographers and nature lovers. Visitor appeal lies in the park’s blend of geological wonder, uniquely adapted ecosystems, and accessible trails that highlight Lanzarote’s volcanic past and natural heritage.
